Am I the only one who noticed his attempt at humor when talking about the Supreme Court and appointing someone. What was it? Ah... here it is from the transcript in the NY Times (registration required):
Q: Mr. president, if there were a vacancy in the Supreme Court and you had the opportunity to fill that position today, who do you choose and why?
Mr. Bush: I'm not telling. I really don't have, haven't picked anybody yet. Plus I want them all voting for me...
He then went on to say how he would choose someone who was a strict constructionist. Fortunately, John Kerry then responded and let us know what bush really meant.
A few years ago, when he came to office, the president said, these are his words: What we need are some good conservative judges on the courts. And he said also that his two favorite justices are Justice Scalia and Justice Thomas. So you get a pretty good sense of where he's heading if he were to appoint somebody.
Sorry, bush. I'm just not in the mood to laugh about the 2000 election debacle yet... maybe later.
